Open House Chicago – October 2019

The 2019 Chicago Architectural Foundation’s annual Open House Chicago is taking place this October 19 & 20. A beloved, free public event for the entire community, more than 250 buildings across Chicago open their doors to share their architectural treasures. Mark the date on your calendar and be sure to visit a few of these special locations!

Volunteers Needed:  Seventeenth Church of Christ, Scientist, located at 55 East Wacker Drive, will be participating again this year. With more than 4,000 visitors over the open house weekend, Seventeenth Church is one of most popular sites in the festival. Due to the high volume of visitors volunteers are needed to greet visitors and give tours on Saturday from 9-5pm and Sunday from Noon-5pm. No previous experience is necessary – a two-page fact sheet about the building will be available for reference – we simply ask that volunteers give a minimum of two hours of their time. Please contact Laura Fisher for more information about volunteering at Seventeenth Church during Open House Chicago.

Seventeenth Church of Christ, Scientist in Chicago was founded in 1924 and built its first permanent church home, designed by Harry Weese & Associates, in 1968. The seven-story structure maximizes the prominent six-sided site at the intersection of Wacker and Wabash. The primary church auditorium is styled after the layout of a Greek amphitheater, with walls clad in travertine and a centrally located wood podium. The auditorium is also home to a 3,316 pipe Aeolian-Skinner organ.
